INTRODUCTION TO CROATIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

This course teaches basic spoken Croatian for everyday communication and introduces some central aspects of Croatian culture, and as much use as possible is made of authentic materials.

REPRESENTATIONS OF THE OTHER EUROPE: CINEMA IN COMMUNIST AND POST-COMMUNIST CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

The aim of the course is to explore the experience of Communism and its aftermath in a number of East and Central European countries, as expressed through the medium of film – Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic.

CULTURES OF SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE

This course aims to provide an overview of the rich cultural diversity of the Slavonic-speaking countries of South-Eastern Europe (the ‘Balkans’). Focusing primarily on the countries of the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, the course combines elements of history, cultural tradition and contemporary art to illustrate some of the distinctive aspects of the various nations of the region. It also places the work of many of the internationally celebrated writers, filmmakers and artists of south-eastern Europe in their broader cultural contexts.
