Dialects

The literary and the standard Croatian Language is based on the central dialect, Shtokavian, more specifically on Eastern Herzegovinian, which is shared with Serbian and is also the basis of standard Serbian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. Other two Croatian dialects are Chakavian and Kajkavian. Each dialect has the name regarding how the interrogative pronoun what is pronounced: što (štokavski), ča (čakavski) and kaj (kajkavski). The čakavian dialect is spoken mainly in the west of the country by the population of the Adriatic islands and a comparatively narrow strip of the cost itself (formerly it was used over much wider area). Kajkavian is heard in northern Croatia and has more in common with the neighbouring Slovene language. Štokavian is by far the most widely used today.
